La-Roche-Guyon
La-Roche-Guyon village ('most beautiful villages of France') is 10km east of Vernon in the Ile de France (Paris) region of France.
Tourist Information and places to visit
The small village of La-Roche-Guyon grew around the foot of the Chateau de la Roche-Guyon, next to the Seine River.
The chateau - the ruins of the original castle dominate the village from the top of a cliff - was built in the 12th century. Troglodyte dwellings were established in the chalk cliff below the castle, and a tunnel carved through to the donjon above.
The newer, altogether grander, castle was built around the 14th century, although it has been extended and renovated a great deal during the intervening centuries. It had an interesting military use in the 20th century when Field Marshall Rommel established his base there.
You can also wander through the 'potager' (kitchen garden) between the castle and the river.
The village itself now forms part of the Natural Park of Véxin, and is an attractive traditional village of the region and period. You can walk along the riverfront or take a boat upstream - a relaxing way to enjoy the afternoon after lunch in one of the villages cafes!
