La Bastide-Clairence
La-Bastide-Clairence ('most beautiful villages of France') is in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department, to the north-east of Sare and Ainhoa.
Tourist Information and places to visit
Founded in 1312 La-Bastide-Clairence is a typical pretty, quiet, basque town, with whitewashed houses and the expected red and green shutters.
The main 'sights' in the town - the church porch and shelters - bear witness to earlier times in the town, but it is the town as an ensemble that is the main attraction here, and the setting between the Pyrenees to the east and the sea to the west.
The walk up to the abbey at Belloc is pleasant, and will inspire you to reflect on the thousands of pilgrims over hundreds of years that have trodden the same path - don't forget to try the world-renowned cheese made from sheeps milk by the monks at Belloc Abbey!
You will also find ample opportunities to buy arty products in La Bastide Clairance, some very high quality and most produced locally by artisans, during your visit in the little galleries and workshops in the town, in part thanks to the local practice of encouraging arts in the town.
