Ile-de-Sein
Ile-de-Sein (most beautiful villages of Brittany) is a small island village 3km west of the Pointe-du-Raz at the western limit of Brittany.
Tourist Information and places to visit
Ile-de-Sein is only about 2km long, with two parts joined by a thin 'neck' of rock. The port and village are on the more eastern (closer to Brittany) side of the island.
Rather a bleak place, Ile-de-Sein is low-lying and inhospitable, especially for plants and trees. Exposure to the force of the Atlantic winds mean that there are no trees on the island. The beaches are also frequently lashed by the wind, and the surrounding sea is dangerous with unexpected currents. The island has occasionally been completely submerged under the sea.
Tourism is now the main activity on the island, which receives many thousands of visitors each year. The landscape being bare, the main highlights are the little town, and the lighthouse at the far end of the island.
There are also two menhirs (standing stones) on the island, indicating that it has been occupied for a long time.
Cars and motorbikes are not allowed on the island, so all movement is on foot.
