Gourdon

Gourdon ('most beautiful villages of Provence') is 12 km north east of Grasse. (Wrong Gourdon? see Gourdon, Lot!)

Tourist Information and places to visit

Gourdon sits atop a rock, at an altitude of 760 metres, with magnificent views over the valley of the Loup River and beyond to the Mediterranean, from Nice to Theoules - a long way!.

It is also known as the 'Eagle's Nest' because of this exalted position. It truly is one of the renowned 'perched villages' - the main attraction of the village is the far-reaching views, which well merit you facing the tourist throng for a couple of hours. Perhaps the best views are from the area around the church.

The 9th century (rebuilt in the 16th century) Chateau de Gourdon is also very interesting, and includes a Museum of Decorative Arts, a Medieval Museum, and is surrounded by gardens designed by the renowned Andre le Notre.

The village itself is inevitably very attractive, beautifully restored, and with medieval streets lined with beautiful old houses, artisan shops selling perfumes and crafts etc.

An interesting way to reach Gourdon is by the old mule track from Bar-sur-Loup.
