Belves
Belves ('most beautiful villages of the Dordogne') is 15 kilometres north of Monpazier, and 20 km south of Sarlat-la-Canéda, in the Dordogne region.

Belves is a lively and attractive bastide town, well preserved with lots of medieval features intact. It has also retained its interesting 15th century covered market.
In the centre of the town, below the 'Place des Armes', you can visit the cave/troglodyte dwellings. These date from the 13th century onwards, and provide a fascinating glimpse into life as it was in the medieval town.
In Belves you will also see the medieval walls and belfry, the city hall, and a 14th century castle. Belves is also known as the 'town of seven bell towers'.
Like many of the towns in the region, Belves was constructed up the side of a rocky outcrop, giving it fine open views across the countryside.
One event not to be missed is the annual 'medieval festival' at Belves (early August), when the town reverts briefly to the 15th century, with everything from jugglers to falconry on display and really is successful at taking you back in time despite the visitor numbers!

There is plenty to enjoy in the surrounding countryside - small villages, open fields and dense forests make this a very attractive place to visit. Several other 'most beautiful villages of France' are also easily accessible, including La Roque Gageac and Monpazier among them.
