Bourges cathedral

The cathedral of St Etienne of Bourges was constructed between 1195 and 1270.

Bourges cathedral is now on the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites in France who describe the cathedral as a 'masterpiece of gothic art' - above all for the great success of the design and proportions. There are clear similarities in the external design between Bourges cathedral and Notre Dame cathedral, Paris.

From the outside of the cathedral it is the elaborate decoration, and the extensive use of flying buttresses, that stand out. Flying buttresses (the thin ribs along the sides of the building) enabled taller cathedrals to be built, with thinner walls.

The use of flying buttreses also enabled the cathedral to be built without a transept (the 'cross' part of the layout, usually found just before the choir) - so the inside of the cathedral is an unbroken design.

The main highlights of the cathedral inlude:

- the carving around the doorway (called the 'tympanum') is an extraordinary and extensive depiction of the Last Judgement, in fine detail and with numerous individual sections to capture your attention

- the stained glass windows it contains, dating from the 13th century construction of the cathedral, also are very attractive and colourful, and contain fascinating depictions of biblical stories

- The great tower at Bourges cathedral is copied from one to be found at the Louvre.
